Radiogardase® (Prussian blue insoluble capsules)
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, radioactive cesium (Cs-137) has been the second most frequently intercepted radiological material in recent years. Cs-137 would be particularly harmful as a weapon of terror, for example as the radioactive element in a “dirty bomb.” Radioactive Cs-137 is used in equipment found in hospitals, factories, construction sites, and food processing plants.
Particles of Cs-137 can be swallowed, inhaled or absorbed into the bloodstream through wounds or the skin and can cause serious illness or death when contamination results in the absorption of high levels of radiation by critical organs. Lower levels of exposure have been associated with the development of cancers. The only effective method of reducing these risks is treating patients soon after exposure to remove Cs-137 from the body.
Radiogardase® (Prussian Blue insoluble capsules) is a licensed product for the reduction in the body burden of thallium and cesium, including Cs-137, following internalization (such as inhalation or ingestion after a “dirty bomb” detonation or an industrial accident). The Radiogardase® (Prussian Blue insoluble capsules) capsule product is manufactured and sold by HeylTex Corporation with market exclusivity rights issued under the FDA Orphan Drug Rule.
Nanotherapeutics, Inc., under a subcontract from HeylTex Corporation, is developing a new pediatric suspension formulation of Radiogardase® (Prussian Blue insoluble capsules) to treat internalized radioactive Cs-137 exposure.
